Audience feedback (click on image for a larger version)

Here are the questionnaires I created filled in by people who have watched Exposed. They are a little blurry due to technical errors with the scanner. Exposed also received a comment from a YouTube member.
Much feedback was positive and stated that the film was gritty and fit the teen drama genre well. Everyone who watched the film said that they wanted to continue watching. Exposed was created to be a gritty film under the teen drama genre the feedback shows that it was succesful. However the feedback also shows that there are areas of improvement. Some partipants said that the voices of the actors could have been louder and scene changes could be more fluid in areas.

Opening Sequence

This is the finish product of our opening sequence.

Editing (construction)

I made a major contribution towards the editing of the media film. This included adding and finding clips from all footage that was recorded to find the right shoot, cutting parts that are unusable(such as rolling action at the start),and inserting them into the film.

Music was added to our opening sequence to set the scene. 3 tracks were added over the opening sequence

Tomba symphony 666 - This was used towards the start of the opening sequence, whilst character eve is doing her make up. This song is edgy and shows how character Eve is feeling. The Song also has a gritty feel which is common in teen drama. It is non diagetic.

Rihanna;  Skin- This song is played when Omar and Eve are on the bed and is diagetic because Eve turns it via the television. It then becomes non diagetic. The song has an intimate feel so has been used when Omar and Eve are getting intimate on the bed.

Lady Sovereign; Jigsaw puzzle - This song was played at the end of the clip from when Eve was left alone and is non diagetic. The tempo of this song is slower which creates a sad feel. Which is relative to how Eve is feeling at this point.

Filming (construction)

Me and another group member Josh were allocated the task of filming the opening sequence. We took it in turns to film and direct the set. We filmed over a period of 3 days and in 2 locations. In laura's bedroom and outside. Originally we had planned to use a tripod but because we decided the film would be gritty we decided to film handheld. I filmed the first scene with Eve doing her make up in the mirror and going to open the door to Omar. we decided to film over the shoulder to see her reflection within the mirror. This scene was chosen to allow us to see what she was doing, whats she's feeling and how she sees herself. As Eve received the text, I zoomed in on the phone to show a close up of the text Eve had received from Omar. As Eve got up and approached the door there was a match on action shoot of her about to upon the door, then her opening the door on the other showing Omar outside. Josh filmed this part. whilst I said rolling action for the actors to begin on time.

Camera Shots
This was the shot that was reflected through the mirror. It was filmed at the back of the actor so it shows both the back of her and her face. This has been done to show how she is feeling and the mirror represents how she sees herself

This was a close up on the mobile phone to allow the viewer to see that Omar has text Eve

This was a tracking shot used towards the end of the film it allow us to see her distress and see other characters laughing at her as she walked pass.

This is a close up of Actor Charlotte as Omar (Nazir) has left her. The close up allows the view to see her distress and  allows you to home in on her feelings
This was shot over Actor Nazir's shoulder. This was done to allow the view to see that he is taking an inappropriate picture. It also allows you to see her reaction as the picture is been taken.

Locations
This is Character Eve's bedroom

This is an outside setting within the school both characters attend.

Mise en Scene (construction)

To keep the opening sequence realistic we decided to film in females teenaged bedroom. We didn't use dramatic lighting to create the mood, instead we used the naturalistic on set light. Some areas are shadowed whilst others are bright. Whilst Eve was left alone on the bed after Omar had left. There was less lighting. This was done to reflect her mood of been sad and feeling bad for what she had done. This allowed the film to look more rugged and gritty which was our original goal.

We didn't use a tripod in the filming, we felt that using a tripod would result in the film being to polished. So instead we filmed hand-held to create a more shaking gritty effect Like seen on other gritty teen film such as Kidulthood ( below).

We choose a bedroom setting again for realism. This is most likely where'd you take someone to get intimate. It also shows the youth aspect of the characters because the bedroom is the only privacy a young person has. There wasn't extra props used in the opening sequence. We simply kept all the furniture and items that were already in the room again to make it more realistic.

Most of our style inspiration came from teen programme such as skins, who have a high fashion dress code. We thought that we would incorporate fashion relevant to youth in our film.
Actor Nazir is wearing A shirt with dark jeans and braces.
Actor Eve is Wearing a floral dress.

Log and Editing

I was allocated the task by my group of completing log and editing sheet. This was to contain all the scenes of our movies and explain why there where outakes.
Scene 1
Eve played by actor Charlotte Elliot is doing her make up in the mirror and then recives a text from omar played by actor Nazir. She then walks towards the door to open it for omar.

Shoot 1 - Initially in the first shoot we used another actress Laura Walters to play Eve however we felt the position wasn't suited to her.

Shoot 2 - This scene was ruined due to the fact our second actress Charlotte laughed.

Shoot 3 - The text message in this shoot didn't send in time.

Shoot 4 - This shoot was to be chosen because

Scene 2
Eve opens the Omar & greats him.

Shoot 1 - The wrong dialogue was used in this scene so therefore it could not be used.

Shoot 2 - Actor Nazirs voice was not loud enough

Shoot 3 - This shoot was successful dialogue was correct. Nazirs's voice however was not loud enough

Scene 3
Omar enter Eve's bedroom

Shoot 1 - The first scene seemed unnatural and actors were unable to compose themselves resulting in unpredicted laughter.

Shoot 2 - This scene started of acceptable, voices where clear, dialogue was correct. However Nazir stared at the camera, making it unrealistic this clip had to be removed.

Shoot 3 - Actor charlotte laughed during this scene, so it could not be used.

Shoot 4 - Actors voice Nazir's was not loud enough to be heard

Shoot 5 - This scene worked well so was kept in the film

Scene 3 Part 2
Eve is convincing Eva to strip, Eva moves to the other end of the room

Shoot 1 - This scene was ruined due to the fact the actor Charlotte forgot what she had to do

Shoot 2 - When the camera switches to Nazir, the light was not sufficient, meaning he wasn't very visiable.

Shoot 3 - This scene was unsuccesful because the phone power down before the actor Nazir was able to take the picture.

Scene 4
Omar leaves the room and Eve is left vulnerable on the bed.

Shoot 1 - Actor Charlotte wasn't ready to be filmed, she was unable to composed so as a result laughed throught the scene.

Shoot 2 - This shoot was successful, this scene only required 2 takes.

Scene 5
This scene is located outside in school grounds. Actor Charlotte walks past Actor Nazir and Jordan Brown, whilst they laugh at her

Shoot 1- The sound of the wind was overpowering so this shot could not be used

Shoot 2 - This shoot was succesful

Copyright

When me and my group had decided what music would be included in the opening sequence we had applied for permission to use the tracks in our film. E-mails were sent to get permission prior to the making of the film for the tracks to be had no response. The e-mail included why we needed the music and to inform them that is was for educational purposes only. It was important that we did this so we were not sued for breach of copyright

Acting part

To makes sure that we included more than one location in our opening sequence, we decided to film Eve walking outside through. I played the part of one of Omar Friend and stood by the wall laughing at Eve as she walked past because of her inappropriate picture

Reason for no Story Board or Shooting Script

The initial aim of the opening sequence was to be gritty. Me and the group came to the conclusion that we weren't going to use a story board or shooting script  because we felt that it would distort the gritty feel of the film making it seem rehearsed. So we agreed to spontaneously think of speech as we went along so that it is more realistic

It was initially planned that Laura Walters was to play the part of Eve however we felt that she wasn't right for the role.

Change in story

During a group discussion we found that we were not able to include all the aspects that we wanted to include and that we had brainstormed about. This is because it would take to long to film and we have deadlines to meet. Also the opening sequence had to be around 2 minutes. It would be impossible for us to include all elements within that time.

I proposed the idea that we cut down some of the characters such as Alesha, Omar boyfriend and Eve's friends Chloe and Hannah. I felt that they didn't really have a major part in the film and that they could easily be removed to save time.

We later decided to narrow down the events of the film to fit the approximate 2 minute deadline. The film would now be:

  • Eve doing her make up in the mirror
  • Recieving a text from Omar
  • Omars then Knocks at the door and Eve lets him in
  • They talk on the bed and Omar encourages her to do "something fun"
  • Eve then stands up and strips of her clothes.
  • Omar takes a picture of her and then leaves
  • Eve is left emotional on the bed
  • Eve walks past Omar and his friend and they laugh.

Planning Notes

During planning process of the opening sequence we brainstormed a lot of our basic ideas on paper.
This was the basic idea of our opening film, the brief story out line and sequences of events we will use this to develop our ideas further. During brainstorming I thought of the idea of the inappropriate pictures of the girl been stuck up around the school.

This was our first brainstorm of characters and actors in the opening sequence. However after this plan we realised that our actor Melina was not able to feature in our film due to other commitments.

This sheet represented each character role within the film

This was just a simple idea of some of the camera angles we wanted to include in the opening sequence. This was only a simple brainstorm and we had plained to develop upon this.

This was a very basic idea of some of the events to take place in the opening sequence. In a group discussion  I thought of the idea of boys playing football in the background to add depth and to allow the opening sequence to look more realistic as this would be happening in a school environment.

During a group disscusion, deciding on what names the names the characters would be giving in the opening sequences. My contributions was that, the girl friend of Omar was to be called Alesha and Alesha friend was to be called Chloe. As a group we agreed on these names for the characters.

During a discussion of which actors would play which roles. I Proposed that Chloe should be played by Abigail Cross, and Alesha should be played by Lauren Evans. The group decided that this was a good idea and that it should go ahead.
